The PHOTO INTERRUPTER, part number 2143464, is a fork-type optical sensor used in a wide range of Epson large-format plotters and printers. It consists of an infrared emitting diode and a phototransistor positioned opposite each other within a black, U-shaped plastic housing.

When a mechanical pin passes through the fork, it interrupts the beam and switches the sensor’s output. Depending on its mounting position, this on/off principle is used to detect the carriage home position, the head spacing, the roll holder lock, or the position of the paper thickness sensor.

The part is sold as a bare component, without the light beam or mounting plate: it clips into place in place of the old one and is reconnected to the original wiring harness. Replacing it restores the equipment to its original performance.
